Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has slammed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over his recent claims that Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has neglected the Gusii community.

Taking to his official X account on Monday, May 12, 2025, Kaluma termed Gachagua as tribal.

The ODM lawmaker faulted the former DP for suggesting that Gusii should have more CSs when several other communities have none.

”Gachagua is an impeached tribal bigot stoking negative ethnicity for cheap politics where there is none. Out of only 22 Cabinet Secretaries to be shared among over 45 ethnic communities, Gusii has the CS for Education. I hope this tribalist is not suggesting that Gusii should have more CSs when several other communities have none. Or is he suggesting that President Ruto should replace the current CS with a person from another community without any CS?” Kaluma’s statement read in part.

Distribution of CS slots

Kaluma went ahead to argue that Mt Kenya has 7 CSs out of the 22 positions and that Gachagua is happy with it, notwithstanding that it denied other communities their due share.

”Mt Kenya has 7 CSs out of 22 positions, and Gachagua is happy at this, notwithstanding that it denied other communities their due share; would he get his community to let go of some positions so that communities with none can also get as dictated by the Constitution? Out of 54 principal secretaries, Gusii has 2 – Solicitor General and Mr Isaboke,” he stated.

Kaluma on PSC posts

Moreover, Kaluma claimed that the Orange party had only two chances for Commissioner of Parliamentary Service Commission, which it gave to Okong’o Omogeni from Gusii and the other to Mishi Mboko.

”ODM had only 2 chances for Commissioner of the Parliamentary Service Commission. The party gave one to Hon. Okong’o Omogeni from Gusii and the other to Mishi Mboko. Not that there are no Luo or people from other ethnic communities in the Commission or senior management of Parliament when the Aba-Gusii has 2 because of this. Gusii has more commissioners, CEOs, MDs, and HoDs than the combined number of CEOs in Kuria and Luo-Nyanza. The roads, electrification and overdevelopment works going on in Gusii under BBG are far more than anywhere else in Nyanza and across the country,” Kaluma argued.

Kaluma’s remarks come after Gachagua, in an interview on May 12, claimed that Raila has neglected the Gusii community, arguing that he was given four CS posts but none went to the Abagusii.
