Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has claimed that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is in denial about his impeachment, insisting that Gachagua seems unaware he can no longer hold any public office for the rest of his life.

Kaluma made these remarks as Gachagua continues to stay active in the political scene, despite being impeached months ago. The MP suggested that Gachagua is living in a bubble, refusing to accept the reality of his political downfall.

“He doesn’t know he was impeached and cannot hold public office for life. I told you not all mad men walk naked,” Kaluma said.

Kaluma’s comments come amid the ongoing political tensions between Gachagua and the current Deputy President Kithure Kindiki. The two leaders have been locked in a bitter rivalry, often clashing publicly.

Gachagua, Kindiki showdown

During an interview with a local TV station on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Gachagua dismissed any suggestions of a rift, asserting that he had no interest in discussing Kindiki’s leadership. He emphasized that his focus remained on his political responsibilities, drawing a clear distinction between his role as an elected leader and Kindiki’s position within President William Ruto’s administration.

According to the former DP, Kindiki merely executes directives from President Ruto, while he has charted his independent political course.

“I cannot talk about Kindiki. He is an employee of Ruto, while I am an elected leader. How can I talk about an employee? Kindiki simply follows Ruto’s instructions, while I am focused on my own path. I have no business discussing him,” Gachagua said.

Kindiki in December 2024, during a media roundtable, insisted that there was no tension between him and Gachagua. Kindiki portrayed their relationship as unchanged, describing it as amicable and grounded in mutual respect.

“Our relationship is the same as it was. We’re good people, good friends,” Kindiki said during a media roundtable in December 2024.

Kindiki in Nyeri

Kindiki recently visited Nyeri, Gachagua’s home county. This marked the first time a top Kenya Kwanza has set foot in the former DP’s home area since his highly publicized impeachment. During his visit, Kindiki urged Gachagua to halt his political activities, emphasizing the importance of focusing on development initiatives for the Mt. Kenya region.

Kindiki stressed that the government is currently prioritizing efforts to address the challenges facing Kenyans and has no time for political conflicts or unnecessary confrontations. He noted that engaging in politics at this time would only derail progress and negatively impact the lives of ordinary citizens.

According to Kindiki, the right time for political campaigns will come, but for now, leaders should channel their energy into development projects that will benefit the people.

Wakati wa siasa ukifika si tutapiga siasa…there’s no point of engaging politics right now…because if we do wananchi will suffer,” Kindiki stated.

He also highlighted that some individuals are keen on diverting attention from development to political squabbles.
