Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has said Raila Odinga is the only person who can beat William Ruto in the 2027 presidential race.

Taking to his X page this Sunday, August 24, 2025, Kaluma cast doubts on the opposition’s capacity to unseat Ruto, asserting that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader is the best-suited to beat Ruto if he decides to contest the elections.

 According to Kaluma, not even a united front by the opposition politicians would be enough to topple the incumbent, as they would not garner enough votes to unseat him.

“Only Baba  @RailaOdinga can beat President @WilliamsRuto if he runs in 2027. The other so-called “opposition leaders,” working together, can’t muster even 15% of Kenya’s total vote,” he stated.

Kaluma has dismissed the current opposition’s relevance, arguing that it would be pointless to spend resources on Ruto’s reelection if he were to form a coalition with Raila ahead of the 2027 polls.

“We don’t need to spend money on the presidential election in 2027 were Baba to go into a coalition with President Ruto – IT WOULD BE DONE!,” he added.

His remarks come after former Agriculture Minister Kipruto Arap Kirwa dismissed the political strength of Raila following his recent alignment with the ruling UDA party of Ruto.

According to Kirwa, while the partnership between the two heavyweights may help them counter challenges together, it does not guarantee their survival in Kenya’s volatile political landscape.

“Ruto and Raila clinging together means they can fight back, but it is not a guarantee that they will survive,” Kirwa said. He argued that Raila’s once formidable authority has significantly diminished over the years, making him less influential on the national stage. “Raila’s gravitas on the political scene has been eroded, and he no longer has the political weight he once had.” Kirwa said during a TV interview on Monday, August 18, 2025.
