Kaluma: Mt Kenya will not vote for Ruto in 2027
By Mabonga Makhanu, July 22, 2026Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has opined that President William Ruto will not get significant votes from the Mt Kenya region in the 2027 general election.
Speaking during an interview with a local radio station on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the outspoken Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker advised the head of state to completely put Mt Kenya aside in his political calculations, especially after the outcome of the Ol Kalou by-election.
“Mt Kenya will not vote for William Ruto in 2027; that I am sure he should remove mt kenya from his calculations; the highest he can get is 15 per cent,” Kaluma stated.
Kaluma argued that he has consistently given the same advice within the broad-based government, saying President Ruto is unlikely to secure even 15 per cent of the Mt Kenya vote in 2027 and should instead concentrate his efforts on other regions rather than relying on Mt Kenya.
He also expressed concern over the government’s heavy investment in the Ol Kalou by-election, noting that despite deploying significant resources to the area, it failed to secure meaningful support from a region that overwhelmingly backed President Ruto in the 2022 general election.
Gachagua spells doom for Ruto
His remarks come after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua predicted a difficult political future for President Ruto in the Mt Kenya region, arguing that the Ol Kalou by-election was only a precursor of what to expect in the 2027 general election.
Gachagua further stated that the political direction of the Mt Kenya region is often reflected in by-election outcomes held before a general election, claiming that the Ol Kalou results signal the region’s changing political mood ahead of the 2027 polls.
Nabwera’s suggestion
On the other side, Lugari Member of Parliament Nabil Nabwera has outlined what President William Ruto should do to compensate for the political ground he has lost in the Mt Kenya region despite enjoying overwhelming support there during the 2022 General Election.
Speaking during an interview with K24 TV on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Nabwera said the president’s best strategy is to strengthen his support in other regions of the country, particularly Western Kenya and Nyanza.
“The president has to consolidate ODM strongholds. He has to consolidate the coast, and he’s doing very well at the coast, by the way. He has to consolidate Nyanza. He’s doing very well in Luo Nyanza. He has to work in Kisii, Nyanza. He has to consolidate the West and also work on the North Eastern region, which is doing pretty well, before consolidating the Rift Valley,” Nabwera said.
