Kaluma: Broad-based government will get over 215 MPs in 2027
By Mabonga Makhanu, July 22, 2026Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has projected that the broad-based government will begin the 2027 General Election with more than 215 Members of Parliament and 33 senators, arguing that the coalition is well-positioned to retain power.
While speaking during an interview on a local radio station on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the outspoken Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker said his projections are based on voting patterns from the 2022 general election and the current political alignment across the country.
“In terms of MPs in the National Assembly, I was seeing a situation where, if things are the way they are, the broad-based government before campaigns is going to start with about 215 members in the National Assembly. In terms of the Senate, they are going to start with about 33 elected senators out of the 47,” Kaluma said.
Kaluma claimed that, even after excluding the entire Mt Kenya region, Lower Eastern, the Kisii region, Nakuru and Laikipia from his calculations, the broad-based alliance would still command a comfortable majority in Parliament before the official campaign period begins.
According to the MP, his analysis shows that the coalition can rely on support from Luo Nyanza, parts of Western Kenya, Turkana, West Pokot, the Kalenjin region, North Eastern Kenya, the Upper Eastern counties of Marsabit, Isiolo and Tana River, and the Coast region.
He further noted that he deliberately left Nairobi out of his calculations, arguing that the capital city remains politically competitive and could swing in either direction during the elections.
2027 presidential race
Kaluma maintained that, based on his assessment, the broad-based government is likely to start the 2027 race with about 215 MPs in the National Assembly and 33 senators, giving it a significant advantage over its rivals.
The legislator, however, said the outcome of the election will largely depend on voter registration and turnout, urging leaders to pay close attention to the number of Kenyans applying for national identity cards and registering as voters ahead of the polls.
He argued that while political realignments are important, the decisive factor in the 2027 general election will be the expansion of the voter register across the country’s regions.
Gachagua’s DCP projections
On the other hand, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also shared his projections, saying he foresees the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) alone winning 20 Senate seats, 20 governorships and 130 parliamentary seats in the 2027 General Election.
He urged aspirants from across the country to join the DCP, assuring them of free and fair party nominations ahead of the 2027 polls. Gachagua maintained that the party is rapidly gaining support nationwide and expressed confidence that it will emerge as one of the dominant political outfits in the next general election.
