Kalonzo Musyoka has expressed confidence that he can unseat William Ruto in 2027 if selected as the flagbearer of a United Opposition coalition.

Speaking on his presidential ambitions on Sunday, March 29, 2026, Kalonzo said he had already received a mandate to vie for the country’s top seat and is now preparing to mount a serious challenge.

“I am running for President. I was given the mandate on the 10th of October last year, the mandate to seek the high office, and prayerfully we have accepted and we are ready for it psychologically,” he said.

The Wiper Patriotic Front leader added that he believes he has the backing of Kenyans who are eager for change, noting that talks are ongoing to bring together opposition leaders under one coalition.

“I think we have the support of the Kenyan people, the Kenyan people want this change. We are in the process of forming a formidable coalition,” he said.

Kalonzo invoked the idea of “ukombozi” (liberation), positioning his bid as part of a broader effort to transform the country’s leadership.

“I hear the word ukombozi, it is time to liberate this country, I can do it, if my colleagues take that decision,” he added.

He further suggested that unity among opposition leaders would be key to defeating Ruto in the next general election, expressing confidence that he would be the preferred candidate.

“I do expect that my colleagues will give me that respect, if they do, William Ruto will be one term, and he knows it,” Kalonzo said.

Kalonzo is eying the backing of opposition leaders, including Rigathi Gachagua, Fred Matiang’i, Eugine Wamalwa, Martha Karua and Justin Muturi, who are also eying the top seat.
