Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has continued to call upon Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition supporters to come out in large numbers for the demonstrations slated for next week.

Speaking after visiting people who got injured during Wednesday 12, 2023, demos at the Machakos Level 5 hospital, Kalonzo insisted next week’s protests would be peaceful.

“We insist that we believe in peaceful demonstrations, in accordance with the law of the land and supreme law of the land in our constitution which guarantees freedom of peaceful demonstrations,” Kalonzo said.

Kalonzo noted that those who were shot during Wednesday’s demonstrations did not have crude weapons and that some were not even involved in the protests.

The Wiper leader said that all Kenyans should guard the rule of the law according to Article 37 of the constitution even if it does not favour one’s political situation

“We have only one country, I want to say we should all abide by the rule of the law, even if it does not seem to favour your political situation,” Kalonzo said.

Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, who accompanied Kalonzo to visit the victims, applauded Machakos county governor Wavinya Ndeti and medics at Machakos level 5 hospital for attending to all patients without discrimination.

However, she expressed her disappointment about how the victims were handled by police, lamenting that some of them were not even involved in the demonstrations but were just victims of circumstances as they went on with their daily activities.

“Only two victims do not have gunshot wounds, the rest have gunshot wounds and some were shot near hearts and others were shot from back and others were shot as they were in their businesses,” Karua said.

Karua also accused the police of disrupting Azimio’s peaceful demonstrations even when they have large numbers protesting peacefully.

She condemned the violence witnessed during the demonstrations stating that it should not be tolerated. Karua additionally warned the police that they are not exempted from the high cost of living.

The Narc Kenya leader urged Kenyans not to be afraid to demonstrate, noting that it was through protests that Kenya has a new constitution.

“Kenyans, do not fear to demonstrate. If it is not for demonstrations we would not be having a new constitution. We would have not removed Kanu government then. Tukiogopa Ruto atakua mbaya kushinda Idd Amin. Tujikaze wakati ni huu,” Karua said.

Earlier, Machakos governor Wavinya Ndeti, while condemning the violence witnessed during the demonstrations, announced that she would clear medical bills for all the victims admitted at Machakos level 5 hospital.

She also said that her administration would help the bereaved families with burial arrangements and expenses.

The hospital’s management said 13 victims had been admitted to the facility, two of them being college students.

Two people are said to have succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at the facility.
