Kalonzo calls out IEBC over silence on election rigging remarks by Sudi

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has criticised the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) over what he termed ‘silence’ on remarks suggesting plans to manipulate the outcome of the 2027 general election.

Speaking during a morning interview with Kameme TV on Monday, May 11, 2026, Kalonzo has questioned why no action has been taken against individuals allegedly making reckless statements about altering election results.

“Kama jamaa anaweza sema uchaguzi unaokuja hata kama kura hazitatosha tutaongeza, huyo ni mtu wa aina gani?” Kalonzo posed.

The former vice president said it was worrying that despite the seriousness of such remarks, the electoral commission had neither condemned the statements nor summoned those involved for questioning.

Hajashikwa, na hatujasikia IEBC ikimkemea mtu kama huyo. And he has not been taken to write a statement,” he added.

Kalonzo warned that careless political utterances touching on election credibility could undermine public confidence in the electoral process and fuel tension ahead of the 2027 polls.

He insisted that institutions mandated to safeguard democracy must act firmly and independently whenever leaders make statements that appear to promote election rigging or interference with the will of voters.

Sudi’s statement

The statement from Kalonzo Musyoka has come months after the Kapseret constituency Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi, who is a close ally to President William Ruto, was recorded hinting at the possibility of election rigging in the next general elections in 2027.

“Nataka nikwambie wewe Wamunyoro; hakuna mtu anaongoza Kenya hii kwa miaka tano. Hiyo kura isipojaa tutajaza na tutajaza na hawa wanachi hawa,” Sudi said.

Kalonzo demands removal of tech companies

Kalonzo has further stepped up the pressure on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), calling for the removal of two foreign firms involved in Kenya’s election preparations, saying their continued role risks undermining public trust ahead of the 2027 general election.

Kalonzo has accused the electoral agency of ignoring earlier agreements with opposition-aligned stakeholders and failing to act on concerns raised about election technology and printing contracts.

He said the United Alternative Government had earlier agreed with IEBC to form joint consultation committees, but the arrangement collapsed.

“We all, as leaders of the Alternative Government, went to IEBC and agreed that we would always be consulting. We also agreed to form a joint committee,” Kalonzo said.

He claimed IEBC failed to form its side of the committee, claiming political interference in the process.

“They were also supposed to appoint their committee, but they did not. It is as if they were instructed from outside not to engage the opposition. We must deal with President Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza government,” he said.

Kalonzo added that IEBC must operate independently under the Constitution and should not take political instructions.

“Kenya is a constitutional democracy. It is not possible for them to take final instructions on what to do or not to do,” he said.
