Kalonzo calls for arbitration to address Gen Z grievances
By Wangari Njuguna, July 1, 2025Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has proposed that neutral arbitrators be appointed to aid in the negotiations between the government and Gen Z.
Kalonzo said having non-partisan mediators will help address the issues with a lot of sobriety and possibly get a solution to them.
He said organisations such as the African Union (AU), eminent persons and church leaders can lead the talks to help quell the situation, which he said is likely to get out of hand if no action is taken.
Speaking during an interview on Kameme TV, Kalonzo said Ruto should not pick the mediators because this will bring a conflict of interest, and no solution will be found.
“The president said he is willing to have a dialogue with the people, but he cannot pick who will lead the talks. We want someone who will not take sides,” said Kalonzo.
Finance Bill
He said last year, after the protests to oppose the Finance Bill, the president had promised to address all the concerns raised by the Gen Z, but he failed to keep the promise.
“The recent protests were an indication that the nation is very angry and the people want their plight addressed, but there is no one to listen to them,” he remarked.
“The stability of this country is very important and there and one way of ensuring we safeguard it is by negotiations to iron out the issues affecting the people,” he said.
“The young people are speaking out, they want a better country, good leadership, and the government has to strive to make it happen,” added Kalonzo.
He also castigated the Kenya Kwanza government over poor leadership, saying the opposition is eyeing to win the election and their mission is to liberate the country.
“Our main agenda is to send Ruto home in 2027, and the new leadership will set right all the things that this government has done wrong,” he remarked.
Kalonzo revealed that several leaders, among them the former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, DP party leader Justin Muturi, PLP party leader Martha Karua, among others, are working together to reconstitute the opposition, which will face off with Ruto in the poll.
He said though each of these leaders currently has their ambitions to vie for the presidency, they will hold their tails and front the best candidate as the flag bearer.
“We have not yet decided who will carry the ticket, but we will do our best to have a sober discussion about it and get the best amongst us,” he remarked.
“The decision we make will be guided by a very crucial factor of unity because this is what we need to bring down the current regime,” he added.
Kalonzo also said he is hopeful the former president Uhuru Kenyatta will join them after he gets back the leadership of the Jubilee party.
He also said ODM leader Raila Odinga is no longer part of the opposition, adding that the Azimio coalition died when he joined the government.
“Odinga joined the government claiming he was going to help make things better, but he was doing it for his personal interests, and I don’t think people can trust him again,” said Kalonzo.
“I cannot join the government, I decided to stick with the people because it was the right thing to do,” he added.
The wiper party leader also took a swipe at the senior advisor to the president, Moses Kuria, over his remarks that there will be no elections in 2027.
He said this is an indication that the president is developing cold feet and is sensing defeat.
