Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has expressed optimism about the future of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party beyond the times of its former leader, Raila Odinga.

Speaking in Kakamega during the 62nd Mashujaa Day on Monday, October 20, 2025, he also addressed the possibility of President William Ruto joining the Orange party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Barasa revisited the remarks made by the president during the ODM leader’s funeral in Bondo on Sunday, October 19, 2025.

ODM founder member

“Ruto is a founder member of ODM and do not be surprised to see him joining our party. He said that he would deal with people looking to break up the party. This party has people who are in government, and in 2027, we are confident we will either make the government or be there as a coalition,” he stated.

He also assured that the party will remain united post-Raila, stressing that the members remaining behind would ensure it remains steadfast.

ODM remains steadfast

“The party is ready, and to those who think ODM will disintegrate, i want to say woe upon them,” he stated.

He also urged leaders to focus on leadership that prioritizes the needs of the ordinary citizens in honour of Odinga, who dedicated his life to fighting for democracy and good governance.

Barasa observed that Raila upheld a legacy of unity, justice, and service to the people, urging all public servants to follow his example by putting citizens first and not personal interests.

“Let us serve with integrity, fairness, and dedication to improve the lives of our people. That is how we truly honour our heroes,” he said.

During Raila’s burial in Bondo, Ruto asserted that he would not allow the party to be taken back to the opposition.

Ruto said he was committed to preserving Raila’s political legacy by strengthening ODM’s structures and vision.

“To ODM members, I want to assure you that ODM will either form the next government or be part of the next government,” Ruto added, in remarks interpreted as a sign of growing political realignment.

“I will not allow anyone to break ODM, because Baba believed in political parties and built ODM over the past 20 years. We will support and keep the party united.”
