Kabando blasts Mudavadi over past alliances, warns of danger to Kenya’s democracy

Former Mukurwe-ini MP Kabando wa Kabando has launched a blistering attack on Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, revisiting old political moments to question his alliances, loyalty, and current role in government.

In a statement shared on X on Sunday, December 28, 2025, Kabando walked Kenyans through more than a decade of political history, blending personal experience with sharp criticism of Mudavadi’s decisions and relationships. The post reflects growing unease within opposition circles as the country slowly turns its attention to the road ahead.

“May 2, 2012, I joined UDF tete’a’tete with Musalia at Parliament member’s lodge. Before he trekked into KICC to ditch ODM, I excused myself, ‘Sir, I won’t be joining you.’ Session whip George Khaniri gazed at me disappointedly, as other MPs rose to escort the Deputy Premier. Why? I had tight info that he was a project of status-quo deepstate mandarins,” he wrote

Kabando explained why he chose to part ways early, saying he sensed forces at play that went beyond normal party politics. He recalls how, despite the political shifts of that time, ODM remained dominant in parts of Western Kenya, winning key seats even as alliances changed and new parties emerged.

“But still, Raila reigned in Vihiga – Akaranga, who’d 2002 karangad the shortest serving VP, comfortably won gubernatorial on an unrecognisable party, as did then MP Otichilo (now governor), CWR, & others on ODM,” he recalled

In his post, Kabando reflects on Mudavadi’s later political moves, acknowledging moments of cooperation with Raila Odinga while also questioning what he describes as shifting loyalties, especially around the 2017 and 2022 election periods. He paints a picture of a politician who appears calm on the surface but is, in his view, highly strategic.

“To give due credit, 2017 Musalia crafted NASA for Raila to pay debt, but in the countdown to 2022, he milked BBI while secretly cohabiting with Ruto,” he wrote

Kabando then turns to the present, expressing deep concern about what he sees as attempts to undermine Kenya’s constitutional order. He warns that current political manoeuvres pose a serious threat to democracy and should not be taken lightly by citizens.

“Musalia’s 2025 Xmas palaver to wheedle Ruto’s evil plot is very dangerous for Kenya’s nascent democracy. He’s unveiling the curtain for the world to fathom a conspiracy to extend Ruto’s term and to obliterate the Constitution of Kenya,” he wrote

The statement ends with a firm declaration of political intent, as Kabando signals confidence within the opposition and frames the coming election as a defining moment for the country’s future.

“For avoidance of doubt, we United Opposition, will offer 1 Candidate for Round 1 Win. Chief Liar Ruto will lose by over 5 million votes. If he dares refuse to exit Ikulu on defeat, THE PEOPLE SHALL invoke Article 1, CoK2010. Constitutional fidelity applies to install the Will of the People,” he concluded
