Justina Wamae calls out Ruto’s govt as national debt burden soars

Former Roots Party presidential running mate Justina Wamae has blasted the current regime led by President William Ruto for failure to manage the national debt burden.

Taking to her X account on Monday, September 8, 2025, Wamae blamed Ruto’s government for worsening the country’s debt burden by what she called ‘eating the whole cake and throwing the plate away.’

Statistically, since President William Ruto took over in September 2022, the country has been borrowing at an alarming rate.

Breaking it down, Kenya has embarked on a borrowing spree, opposed to what Ruto had promised while entering office.

The country has been borrowing Ksh2.29 million per minute, Ksh137.5 million per hour and Ksh3.3 billion per day in the duration.

As he marks three years in office this week, President William Ruto has so far borrowed Ksh3.5 trillion. Economists now warn that the rising debt is unhealthy. Justina Wamae has also aired her concerns.

”This regime has increased the public debt by Ksh3.5 trillion in three years, and there is no development in the country to justify this massive debt. Kenyans must vote for creators of wealth as opposed to spenders. I have told you time and time again that the national cake got finished and the plate thrown out. It is time for Kenya to decide whether we should cook ugali or bake another cake. Creating wealth for the nation Kenya is the ONLY agenda, bigger than wantam and tutam shenanigans.” She said.

“The government has borrowed Ksh3.5 trillion in the last three years, which translates to Ksh3.3 billion a day. President Kibaki did a lot of development, yet he borrowed only Ksh1.2 trillion for 10 years. Where is the Ksh1.2 trillion we are borrowing every year going?”, Ndindi Nyoro, Kiharu MP and former Budget Committee Chairperson, said on Saturday, September 6, 2025.

”Out of that, the Kenyan Debt is now over Ksh 12.1 Trillion. This is besides the Ksh175 billion borrowed through securitisation of the Fuel Levy and the Ksh45 billion Talanta Bond.” Nyoro added.

The Kiharu lawmaker was speaking in Nyeri during the CITAM Business Forum Expo, which brought together business People and entrepreneurs, allowing participants to learn and exhibit their products. Nyoro added that Africa must adopt the view of having wealth as capital to do more production, innovation and expansion.
