Junet Mohamed: ODM will court other parties if UDA talks fail

Suna East Member of Parliament and National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has revealed that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is already exploring alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections, beginning with ongoing negotiations with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Speaking on the night of Wednesday, January 21, 2026, during an interview with a local TV station, Junet emphasised that while ODM prefers to reach an agreement with UDA, the party remains open to engaging with other political parties should talks stall.

“ODM will be in a broad-based government until 2027, and that’s why, as a party, we have already started negotiations for 2027, beginning with UDA,” Junet said.

“If we don’t reach an agreement, we will engage with other parties.”

ODM strategy

The legislator described the process as a strategic move to ensure that ODM remains a key player in Kenya’s political landscape, securing alliances that can strengthen the party’s position in the next elections.

According to him, ODM must be part of the next government.

Junet’s remarks come days after both ODM and UDA approved pre-coalition talks ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

ODM-UDA PG meeting

The two parties are now set to convene a joint Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting in the coming weeks to review the progress of the 10-point agenda and the implementation of the National Dialogue Committee Report (NADCO) report.

In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, UDA said the meeting will bring together legislators from both parties as part of ongoing efforts to track reforms agreed upon by the two sides.

The planned sitting will assess the work of the Committee on the Implementation of the 10-point Agenda and the NADCO report, which was appointed in August 2025 to guide the process.

“The joint Parliamentary Group meeting of the UDA and ODM parties will be held in the coming weeks to take stock of the progress of the Committee on the Implementation of the 10-point Agenda and the NADCO report, which was appointed into office in August 2025,” UDA stated.
