Junet explains why he was not with Raila in India during his final days
Suna East Member of Parliament (MP) and National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has explained why he was not with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in India at the time of his death on October 15, 2025.
Speaking on the night of Wednesday, January 21, 2026, during an interview with one of the local TV stations, Junet dismissed speculation surrounding his absence, revealing that he was unwell and undergoing medical treatment during the period leading up to Raila’s final trip abroad.
“Honestly, my records are there. I was unwell,” Junet said.
Medical procedure
He went ahead to note that his health condition prevented him from travelling as planned, disclosing that he had recently been discharged from the hospital and was still recovering from a medical procedure at the time.

Junet recounted that the day he was discharged from hospital on a Thursday coincided with a meeting Raila had convened at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi. Despite his condition, he said he went straight from the hospital to attend the meeting.
“In fact, the day I was discharged from the hospital on a Thursday, it was the day we met Baba at the Serena Hotel. There was a small meeting he had called, and I was there, right from the hospital. I just went straight to Serena,” he said.
He further explained that Raila travelled the following day, on a Friday, in the evening, only for him to pass away days later while receiving treatment in India.

Bringing Raila’s body from India
Following his death, a team of leaders and his close allies were identified to fly to India and bring back his body.
Junet said that he was initially part of the team scheduled to travel to India to bring back Raila’s body, but was advised against making the trip due to his medical state.
“So, on Friday, is when he travelled in the evening, and then he passed on, on the 15th October. I was in the team that was supposed to go to India, but I was still not feeling well. I had a procedure, actually, and the records are there,” he explained.
Raila passed away on October 15, 2025, while in India, and he was in the company of his sister Ruth Odinga, his youngest daughter Winnie Odinga, and his bodyguard Maurice Ogeta at the time of his passing.
A section of Kenyans had raised questions about Junet’s whereabouts, who, when Raila was alive, could rarely be missed in his foreign trips.
