Jubilee Party condemns Gachagua’s tourism boycott remarks
By David Nthua, July 20, 2026Jubilee Party has condemned remarks by Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua calling on tourists and foreign investors to stay away from Kenya until after the 2027 General Election.
In a statement dated Monday, July 20, 2026, Jubilee said political campaigns should not damage Kenya’s economy.
The statement was signed by Secretary-General Moitalel Ole Kenta and shared on X by Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang’i.
The party acknowledged concerns about insecurity, political violence and the shrinking democratic space.
However, it warned that discouraging visitors and investors could hurt millions of ordinary Kenyans.
Jubilee warns of economic consequences
“While we fully appreciate the frustrations that continue to be expressed regarding the state of governance, insecurity, the shrinking democratic space and the growing concerns over the use of violence and criminal elements in our politics, we believe that any communication made in pursuit of political change must equally safeguard the national interest,” Jubilee stated.
The party said tourism supports hotels, tour operators, transport businesses, conservation programmes and farmers. Foreign investment also creates jobs and supports industrial growth.
“The people who bear the greatest cost of declining tourist arrivals or reduced investment are not those in positions of political authority,” the statement reads in part.
Jubilee cited hotel workers, tour guides, artisans, taxi operators and farmers among those who could lose income.
It urged tourists, investors and development partners to continue engaging with Kenya.
“Our differences with the current administration are political and policy-based. They should never diminish confidence in the Republic of Kenya itself or the immense potential of its people,” the party stated.
Jubilee also challenged President William Ruto’s administration to address the concerns raised by Gachagua.
It said investor confidence required respect for constitutional rights, political tolerance and protection of life and property.
Gachagua cites insecurity
Gachagua made the disputed remarks during a church service at ACK St Thomas Cathedral in Kerugoya, Kirinyaga County, on Sunday.
“Because we do not want to destroy tourism in this country, I want to call upon tourists to suspend their visit to Kenya until next year,” he said.
The former deputy president also advised foreign investors to delay their plans.
“Between now and the next election, foreign investors should stay away from this country,” Gachagua said.
He linked his position to what he described as growing insecurity and political violence. He also questioned whether citizens could trust security agencies to investigate complaints involving police officers
Jubilee urged leaders across government and the opposition to exercise restraint.
“Our words carry weight. They shape perceptions, influence markets, affect livelihoods and ultimately determine how the world views our nation,” it stated.
