Irungu Kang’ata: Sifuna must seek Gachagua’s blessing to penetrate in Mount Kenya politics

By , June 18, 2026

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has advised Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to seek the support of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua if he hopes to make political inroads in the Mount Kenya region.

Speaking during an interview with a local TV station on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Kang’ata argued that Gachagua has emerged as the dominant political voice in the region and remains a key figure whose endorsement could significantly influence any politician seeking support from Mount Kenya voters.

“Where I come from, Riggy G is strong; he has become the voice of the region, and I have no doubt that come the next election, he is going to exert his revenge,” Kang’ata said.

According to Kang’ata, Sifuna has the potential to grow into a formidable national leader but must appreciate the realities of regional politics. He noted that while Sifuna enjoys popularity in some quarters and has demonstrated strong leadership qualities, he cannot ignore influential political figures and opinion leaders who command substantial support in different parts of the country.

The Murang’a governor further revealed that he would like to see Sifuna succeed politically and even expressed his willingness to support him as a friend. Kang’ata recalled their shared political and academic background, saying they belonged to a generation mentored by veteran politician and Siaya Governor James Orengo, revealing Sifuna was his former classmate.

“I am pushing for Sifuna; he has to be under a certain umbrella; he cannot go all the way without it. I would want the best out of Sifuna,” Kang’ata stated.

He advised the Nairobi senator to develop a clear manifesto and political blueprint while also engaging regional elders and influential leaders across the country.

Kang’ata was particularly emphatic about the need for Sifuna to engage Gachagua if he intends to gain traction in the Mount Kenya region.

“Sifuna cannot go far without consulting regional elders. Like where I come from, he needs to talk to Wamunyoro because without Wamunyoro’s blessings, he cannot go beyond him. That is real politics,” Kang’ata said.
