IEBC issues deadline for submission of names of party nominees
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has given political parties until next week Thursday to submit the names of their candidates in the upcoming general elections.
In a public notice, IEBC said that it expects the parties to submit all the names of aspirants who won party tickets in various elective seats in the ongoing nomination exercise.
“Submit the names of persons nominated to contest in the General Election. The prescribed Forms 11H (presidential), 11I (Senate), 11J (County Woman Member of the National Assembly), 11K (Member of National Assembly, 11L (County Governor), and 11M (County Assembly Ward Member) of the schedule of the elections (General) Regulations, 2012.
The form shall be delivered in printed copy and electronic version (Microsoft Excel) at Anniversary Towers 21st floor between 8 am and 5 pm,” the electoral commission said.
The Wafula Chebukati-led commission also ordered the political parties to resolve any underlying issues regarding the nomination process with their aspirants before they submit the forms.
The order by IEBC comes at a time when most aspirants from both Azimio la Umoja One Kenya and Kenya Kwanza have been protesting the results of the nominations exercise. The protesting aspirants claim that the nominations were marred by irregularities and therefore should be repeated.
Following the emerging issues from across the political divide, the electoral commission has asked the parties’ leadership to solve the rising matters by Friday, April 22 before they submit the names of the winners.
IEBC, however, warned political parties that it shall not accept the names of election nominees who are neither qualified nor eligible to vie in an election.
“The Commission shall reject the candidature of any person nominated by a political party for any elective position. If that candidate is not qualified or eligible for election under the Consitution, the Elections Act, 2011 or any other law,” it said.
