Ichung’wah: Gachagua reached out via proxy after impeachment to talk to Ruto

Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah has revealed that he has been in contact with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua even after his impeachment.

Speaking on Obinna Show Live, aired on Thursday, April 23, the National Assembly Majority Leader, who fell out with Gachagua during his impeachment in October 2024, said the former Deputy President reached out to him through a mutual contact.

“I have spoken to Riggy G. Even after impeachment, there was a time he had a problem; he reached out through a friend.”

According to Ichung’wah, the approach came at the beginning of 2025 when a common friend contacted him, saying Gachagua wanted to speak with him. The communication was later facilitated through a phone call, where Gachagua sought his help in reaching President William Ruto.

Ichung’wah explained that Gachagua was seeking assistance in having his impeachment case, which is currently before the court, addressed.

However, he maintained that the matter could not be influenced in the way Gachagua wanted, as it is a legal process involving the National Assembly and not something the President can directly intervene in.

He noted that while he agreed to pass along the message, he made it clear that the request was unlikely to succeed given the nature of the case and the separation of powers between the arms of government.

“And he wanted to sent somebody to the president. The friend came; we agreed. I spoke with Gachagua. The thing he wanted – i told him that I can’t go to the president; that is a no.”

Ichung’wah also noted that he took that opportunity to counsel the former Deputy President, urging him to stop being bitter and angry and to allow due process to take its course.

He maintained that despite being at loggerheads with Gachagua, he is a pragmatic person who can work with anyone.

Ichung’wah and Gachagua have been at loggerheads for a long time, trading sharp attacks against each other. Even after meeting in Ol Kalou during the burial of former Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho, Gachagua continued to criticise Ichung’wah, mentioning him several times.

Urging the president to advise him to tame his tongue and show respect to other leaders.
