I will not allow DP Gachagua to be impeached – Moses Kuria
By Arnold Ngure, August 7, 2024
Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has vowed to protect Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from any plots of impeachment by the legislative houses.
Speaking during a funeral service of Ngugi Njoroge in Subukia on Wednesday, August 7, Kuria stated that despite his differences with Gachagua, he would not allow legislators to kick him out of government.
“I will not agree (sic) for the Deputy President to be impeached. As long as I’m alive, I will not allow his impeachment,” Kuria said.
“As long as I am alive, sitakubali akuwe (I will not let him be) impeached,” he emphasised, “I have released him on free bond, hakuna shida (there is no problem).”
On Sunday, August 4, Gachagua told journalists that he was aware of a move by a section of leaders to impeach him but was unperturbed by them.
“I hear they wanted to impeach me, but they did not have the numbers to do so. Now I hear that they are saying with Raila and his people in government they have the numbers to oust me if they unite,” Gachagua told journalists.
The impeachment comes hot on the heels of reported bad blood and a less than cordial working relationship with President William Ruto.
In June, a section of Mount Kenya leaders indicated their intention to announce a new leader to represent the region’s interests.
Allaying fears of the looming impeachment, Gachagua said the president had briefed him of his intention to bring onboard Raila Odinga and leaders from his party to the government.
“Ruto did not tell me Raila was coming with his people to get rid of me, he said they were coming to help, and I believed him. So I am not taking the impeachment issues seriously,” Gachagua noted.
Kuria-Gachagua differences
On June 22, 2024, Gachagua and Kuria’s differences came to a head during the burial of billionaire Gerald Gikonyo in Murang’a.
The deputy president openly castigated Kuria, saying that he was fond of making ‘divisive’ social media posts.
“Some are known for posting silly social media posts whose agenda is promoting divisions in this community,” Gachagua stated.
This came after Kuria accused the DP of being a crybaby after he went on a rant to complain about how some powerful people within the office of the president were undermining him.
Kuria said that instead of looking for pity from the Mount Kenya region, Gachagua should promote a culture of working smart and of resilience.
“I cannot be a party to a narrative of crying wolf where there is none, and instead of promoting the culture of hard work, resilience, and working smart, we are teaching them how to feel demeaned, trashed, and befitting pity,” Kuria said.
