Governor lauded for drought mitigation

The government has applauded Wajir County Government over its efforts to mitigate drought, which has in the recent past led to loss of livelihoods and claimed thousands of livestock.

Administrative Officer at Office of the President Michael Ololtuaa, while distributing relief food to affected people in the region, said while the National government had been distributing relief food to all parts of Wajir, the devolved unit has done a great job to alleviate poverty amid the biting drought.

The move comes after Governor Ahmed Abdullahi in February appealed to President William Ruto to declare the continuing drought a national disaster to enable the government to mobilise resources to assist the affected population.

Thursday, the President celebrated Governor Abdullahi’s efforts in mitigating drought leading to saving of lives and livelihoods.

“What the county government of Wajir is doing is a great job. They have been spending so much to alleviate poverty in Wajir by distributing relief to the people who are in need,” Ololtuaa said.

Ololtuaa was speaking over the weekend during the launch of the third phase of Iftar programme targeting 25,000 families, an initiative of the county.

He called on Assistant County Commissioners, chiefs and their assistants to work closely with the county government officials to ensure fair distribution of the relief food during this holy month of Ramadhan.

He said priority should be given to underprivileged families.
