Embakasi North Member of Parliament James Gakuya dismissed the possibility of the impeachment of Nairobi County boss Johnson Sakaja by the Members of the County Assembly.

Gakuya has said Ruto has embarked on the pact between Nairobi County and the national government to save Governor Sakaja from impeachment.

Speaking in a morning interview at Kameme TV on Wednesday, February,18,2026, Gakuya has said that the services of the Nairobi County government were already crippling a situation that had put Governor Sakaja at the risk of impeachment by the MCAs.

Gakuya has stated that the move to create a pact between the two levels of government is aimed at redeeming Sakaja from being haunted out of office.

“The services within Nairobi County had crippled. The impeachment of Sakaja as governor before 2027 is impossible because the route that President Ruto has taken is meant to redeem Sakaja from impeachment; therefore, the move to impeach him is as good as dead,” Gakuya said.

Sentiments from the legislator who is eying the Nairobi County gubernatorial seat in 2027 have come hours after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja signed a cooperation agreement with President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi.

The move has now raised concerns that have already drawn scrutiny from political leaders who warn the deal could undermine county autonomy and devolution as entrenched in the Constitution.

Among the areas of collaboration agreed upon between the national government and Nairobi County are refuse management, county roads, markets, housing, and water.

In September 2025, Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai spearheaded a motion to impeach Governor John Sakaja, citing over 20 charges, including mismanagement of county services, collapsing infrastructure, poor garbage collection, and the alleged privatisation of public health functions.

Governor Johnson Sakaja survived the impeachment motion following interventions by President William Ruto and former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, late Raila Odinga. The handshake politics between Ruto and Raila saved him from an embarrassing ouster at the hands of Nairobi MCAs, and President Ruto now seems to be protecting the UDA governor further from the risk of being impeached through the collaboration deal.
