Gachagua vows to offer diaspora community nomination slots

By , July 27, 2025

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has assured members of the diaspora community that they would be included in the leadership structure of his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) after the 2027 general elections.

Gachagua, while addressing Kenyans living in Baltimore, USA, on Sunday, July 27, 2025, outlined plans to allocate nomination slots to the diaspora both in the Senate and the National Assembly.

He explained that the party intends to have nominated senators representing the diaspora as part of a broader strategy to bring in diverse perspectives and best practices.

He further indicated that at least one nominated senator would come from the diaspora to help shape policies and provide a global outlook on national issues.

The former deputy president also revealed that a nominated member of the National Assembly would be selected from the diaspora to participate in legislation and oversight.

He noted that the experience and expertise of Kenyans abroad would be valuable in strengthening the legislative process and improving accountability in government.

“I want you people to come back home and help us. I would want in the senate my party, the DCP, to have several nominated senators because we are strong in various counties, and nomination slots are decided depending on numbers. I would like to have one nominated senator in the senate from the DCP party so that you can come and enrich our thinking and share with us best practices seen elsewhere,” Gachagua said.

Inclusion

In addition, Gachagua pledged to push for the inclusion of diaspora representatives at the county level.

He proposed that in each of the more than 25 counties where DCP expects to be strong, a specially elected Member of the County Assembly (MCA) from the diaspora would be nominated.

These MCAs would be tasked with supporting county oversight and spearheading legislation aimed at improving service delivery at the devolved level.

“In all counties, which are over 25, we will be strong; it is my proposal to have in each a specially elected MCA from the diaspora in each of those counties to assist us in overseeing the counties and to come up with county legislation that will enhance legislation; that is my offer, and I will continue to engage,” he added.

Gachagua emphasised that the party’s plan is part of a larger vision to ensure the diaspora community is fully integrated into the country’s political and developmental agenda.
