Gachagua: I have never lost an election

Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) and former Deputy President of Kenya, has underscored his unbroken success in elections, attributing it to strong alignment with public sentiment.

In an interview with a local television station on October 5, 2025, Gachagua said, “I am one Kenyan leader who never deviates from where the people are, I always align with the people and that is why I have never lost an election, anybody I have ever supported has won because I take my time to listen to the people I have listened to the people and they have made a decision.”

Gachagua credited his grassroots approach for his electoral wins, noting that listening to constituents and responding to their priorities has been central to his political strategy. His statement positions him as a politician confident in his ability to read public mood and translate it into political outcomes.

Gachagua made these remarks amid his presidential ambitions, signalling his intent to leverage his strong public support and unbroken electoral record as he positions himself for the 2027 race.

Wantam movement

The DCP leader highlighted the growing influence of the “Wantam” movement, a slogan translating to “One-Term,” which has gained traction as a critique of President William Ruto’s administration.

“I have heard the president saying we only talk of Wantam, indeed it is not our wish to mention the Wantam throughout, it is the people who are forcing us they do not want to listen to anything else,” Gachagua remarked.

He explained that Kenyans are prioritising this narrative over other issues such as education, health, or the economy. The movement, according to Gachagua, represents a public sentiment that leaders cannot ignore without risking political irrelevance. “If any leader moves away from the Wantam movement, they become obsolete, and I don’t think any leader can make that mistake,” he said.

Political perceptions

Gachagua responded to critiques portraying him as part of Kenya’s challenges. He stated, “I don’t know who these people are who see Rigathi Gachagua as part of the problem. Yes, at some point, they considered me one, but along the way, I became part of the solution.”

The DCP leader emphasized his continued commitment to political engagement and strategic alliances, asserting that his involvement in public affairs is guided by the demands and priorities of the Kenyan electorate.
