Fight on, Gachagua: Nyeri Governor Kahiga rallies former DP after impeachment ruling
By Mabonga Makhanu, June 9, 2026Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has urged former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua not to lose hope but fight on following the High Court’s decision to uphold his impeachment.
In a statement shared on his social media pages on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, Governor Kahiga, who had initially stood firmly with the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader during his political struggles in the Senate and national assembly before later distancing himself and reaffirming his loyalty to the ruling UDA party, expressed sympathy for his former ally.
“That was a miscarriage of justice! Processes, procedures and fidelity to the law were grossly breached in the impeachment! The Ksh50 million award in damages is no consolation! Fight on, Riggy G! It shall be well.”

The outspoken governor argued that the impeachment process was marred by serious legal and procedural irregularities. According to Kahiga, the court’s decision amounted to a miscarriage of justice, maintaining that due process, proper procedures, and fidelity to the law were grossly violated during the impeachment proceedings.
Kahiga further appeared unimpressed by the Senate’s award of Ksh50 million in damages to Gachagua for what was deemed unfair targeting during the impeachment process. He noted that the compensation could not adequately make up for the injustice that had been committed against the former deputy president.
Despite the setback, Kahiga encouraged Gachagua to remain strong and continue pursuing justice through the available legal and political channels. He expressed confidence that better days lay ahead for the DCP party leader should he move to the appellate court
High court ruling

The ruling was delivered by Justices Eric Ogola, Freda Mugambi, and Antony Murima on Monday, June 8, 2026, and found that the Members of Parliament and Senators followed the due process for the removal of Gachagua from office.
“The prayers seeking to quash Gachagua’s impeachment are hereby declined,” the bench has ruled.
