Elachi resigns as Nairobi Speaker

By , August 11, 2020

Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi has resigned citing incessant leadership wrangles at City Hall and threats on her life.

Her deputy, John Kamangu, is set to take over in an acting capacity and chairperson of the Nairobi County Public Board Service.

“I want to tender my resignation to the President of Kenya…It has given me great pleasure to serve as the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker. With the coming of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services, I believe Nairobi will be transformed. I humbly tender my resignation…” said Elachi in the event televised from City Hall.

As she exited, the embattled Elachi appointed Pauline Okuku to act as the new assembly clerk as the founding clerk John Ngwele continues to fight court cases to keep his job.

Elachi claimed that her children had been threatened in the turf wars that embroiled City Hall in recent days.
