Didmus Barasa vows to vie for Bungoma gubernatorial seat, says he fears no one

By , July 13, 2025

Kimilili Member of Parliament (MP) Didmus Barasa has firmly declared his intention to contest the Bungoma gubernatorial seat in the 2027 elections, asserting that no one can stand in his way.

Addressing the residents of Kabuchai constituency on Sunday, July 13, 2025, Barasa called on Bungoma voters to support his ambition.

He also cautioned that those hunting him will not succeed.

I want to tell them they will try, they will attempt, and they will execute, but they will not succeed.

Barasa will be contesting against Westlands Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi.

Tim Wanyonyi’s gubernatorial bid

This comes after Tim Wanyonyi declared his interest in vying for the Bungoma gubernatorial seat in 2027.

Speaking to the residents of the Kabuchai constituency, Wanyonyi said that his priority as Bungoma governor will be women, noting their central role in society.

“You had sent me to Nairobi for haunting; I have now finished my journey and have decided to end my journey in Bungoma, and when I come to Bungoma, my priority will be women,” Wanyonyi said.

Wanyonyi’s gubernatorial bid has received endorsement from 18 elected Members of Parliament (MPs) from Bungoma County.

Addressing the media in the local dialect on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, Sirisia MP John Waluke, who serves as the leader of the Western MPs caucus, said that all nine elected MPs from Bungoma, apart from Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, had met and agreed to throw their weight behind Wanyonyi.

According to Waluke, Barasa skipped the meeting because he also has an interest in the Bungoma gubernatorial seat, but the remaining eight MPs had decided to involve all the elected and nominated Members of County Assembly (MCAs) in the plot to have Wanyonyi succeed Governor Kenneth Lusaka.

“As Bungoma people, we, the Members of Parliament who were elected from the county, have met to decide on the development of Bungoma County. All nine of us, except Didmus Wekesa Barasa, who has an interest in the Bungoma gubernatorial seat, have decided that Bungoma will not fall as we watch. We have decided that we will call all the MCAs on Thursday next week and meet them at the home of Tim Wanyonyi. All the 45 elected MCAs and all the nominated ones will meet to decide on the future of Bungoma. Bungoma will not get destroyed as the MCAs and elected MPs watch,” Waluke said.
