Didmus Barasa predicts Sifuna and Osotsi’s exit from ODM

By , March 30, 2026

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has predicted that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi are likely to leave the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), likening their strained relationship with the party to a marriage heading for divorce.

In an interview on Monday, March 30, 2026, Barasa described the behaviour of the two senators as suggestive of “an affair with other political parties” and argued that their bond with ODM has deteriorated beyond repair and it is only a matter of time before they leave.

“Political parties are similar to marriage; they thrive on the same principles. The likes of Sifuna and Osotsi are behaving in a manner that insinuates they have an affair with other political parties. The relationship between these two and the ODM party has broken down beyond repair; it is only a matter of time before they leave,” Barasa stated.

He further noted that strengthening ODM’s bargaining position requires removing members who appear to be affiliated with other parties. Once these individuals have exited, the party will be able to negotiate on equal footing.

“The only way to strengthen ODM’s bargaining position is to remove personalities who appear to be affiliated with other parties. Once they have moved on, we can sit down to negotiate on equal terms,” Barasa said.

ODM tensions

Barasa’s remarks come as ODM continues to navigate divisions in the post-Raila Odinga era. The party is split between the Linda Mwananchi faction, led by Sifuna and his allies, and the Linda Ground group, headed by party leader Oburu Oginga and supported by figures such as Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.

The Linda Mwananchi team has organised rallies across Kakamega, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Kitengela, and other regions, positioning itself as a grassroots-driven force.

The faction includes Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Nyamira Senator Erick Okong’o Mogeni, and several MPs, including Babu Owino (Embakasi East) and Wanami Wamboka (Bumula).

Tensions rose in February 2026 when ODM’s National Executive Committee moved to suspend Sifuna from his role as Secretary General, temporarily replacing him with Deputy SG Catherine Omanyo. Osotsi, who served as a co-deputy, has also faced pressure over his position, with some leaders reportedly eyeing succession.

Future of ODM

Sifuna temporarily blocked the NEC resolution through the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, but the underlying rifts remain. Osotsi has indicated that he will follow Sifuna if he leaves the party, highlighting solidarity within the faction.

Other ODM members have expressed scepticism about the sustainability of the rebellion, noting the lack of structure and resources.
