DCP officially withdraws from Mbeere North by-elections, backs DP Party

By , September 10, 2025

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has officially withdrawn from the Mbeere North by-election contests and instead thrown their weight behind the Democratic Party (DP) candidate.

During a presser at the party headquarters read by the party leader and former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, they announced that they have decided to take a step back and instead support the Justin Muturi-led DP party, which has filled a candidate in the upcoming by-election.

The party leader stated that the reason behind this move is that the slot was previously held by the Democratic Party and that the party had requested that they retain it for the party’s candidate to complete a full term.

The party leader continued to state that they have also accepted to support the Wiper party in the Muguni ward by-election. He further added that in Bungoma they have decided to support the Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) in the Chwele Kabuchai ward by-election.

DCP candidate ditching party

This comes days after the DCP Mbeere North candidate ditched the party and went to Moses Kuria’s Chama Cha Kazi party.

In a statement shared by the candidate on his socials on Saturday, September 6, 2025, Mbui, who also doubles as the MCA for Evurore Ward and was seeking to replace Geoffrey Ruku, who left the seat vacant for a Public Service Cabinet Secretary slot, stated that his party, DCP, has decided to drop out of the race and leave it to their constituent party, DP Party.

He did not spare his now former party. While labelling it a members’ club within the United Opposition, he stated that his party has been influenced by constituent parties within the United Opposition not to field a candidate in the upcoming Mbeere North by-election and leave it to the Justin Muturi-led DP party, a decision which, according to him, is meant to kill his political ambition.

The Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, who for the recent past had been actively traversing the constituency campaigning for the candidate, vowed to continue supporting the candidate even if he were to vie for another party other than DCP.

The candidate, ever since ditching DCP, has now been embraced by Moses Kuria, even seeing him traversing the constituency as he urges the locals to vote for him.
