DCP leaders hold thanksgiving celebration after Ol Kalou by-election win
By David Nthua, July 27, 2026Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa and Nyandarua Senator John Methu have joined residents of Mugumo in Ol Kalou to celebrate the Democracy for the Citizens Party’s recent by-election victory.
The event was held on Monday, July 27, 2026, eleven days after DCP candidate Sammy Douglas Waweru Kamau defeated United Democratic Alliance candidate Samuel Muchina Nyaga.
Thang’wa described the gathering as a thanksgiving celebration organised by residents following the July 16 poll.
“Today, in solidarity with my brother, Senator Methu, we joined the people of Mugumo for a thanksgiving celebration as they marked their historic victory,” Thang’wa said.
He congratulated residents and said the victory belonged to DCP supporters beyond Ol Kalou.
Gachagua mocks UDA campaign spending
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also used the celebration to mock UDA’s campaign strategy during the by-election.
“Watu walikuwa wanasema uchaguzi iendelee waletewe mpaka ndege,” Gachagua said.
His statement loosely translates to residents asking for the campaigns to continue until politicians brought them aeroplanes.
The former deputy president was referring to the money and resources displayed during the campaigns.
He maintained that voters still rejected UDA despite the ruling party’s well-funded mobilisation.
DCP continues Ol Kalou celebrations
Thang’wa described Ol Kalou residents as heroes who had demonstrated resilience and determination.
“Every day is a celebration of the resilience and determination of our people,” he said.
The celebration also gave DCP leaders another opportunity to present the Ol Kalou outcome as a wider political message ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua and his allies have argued that the result shows Mt Kenya voters can reject government-backed candidates despite intensive campaigns.
UDA leaders have, however, downplayed the defeat and maintained that the Ol Kalou parliamentary seat did not belong to the ruling party before the by-election.
