Committee to decide fate of Ruto’s EACC nominee

National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) has till tomorrow to table its report on the fate of President William Ruto’s nominee for the position of chairperson of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

The committee chaired by Tharaka MP George Murugara is today set to meet and make a decision as to whether to approve or reject Bishop David Oginde (pictured).

However, some members of the committee who did not want to be named said that although they are yet to take a vote on the matter, most of the members are in agreement that they should support Oginde for the said position owing to his vast knowledge in governance matters.  “The report is being done by the secretariat; they will then present it to members tomorrow for scrutiny and adoption,” said a source who did not want to be named.

Three months

The move by the committee comes after vetting Oginde last Wednesday for the post.

While appearing for the committee, Oginde proposed that high profile cases be heard and determined within three months if the country is to win the war against corruption.

The bishop emeritus of the Christ is the Answer Ministries (CITAM) said that parliament should move with speed and pass the necessary legislation so that such cases do not continue to drag as currently experienced.

He insisted that cases involving high and mighty should be treated like the election petitions which have been given timelines as to when they can be dealt with.
