Cheruiyot criticises Sifuna, thanks Kanduyi residents for rejecting him
By Mabonga Makhanu, July 26, 2025Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot has launched a strong attack on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna over his recent statements directed at the government.
Speaking during a function in Kanduyi on Saturday, July 26, 2025, Cheruiyot thanked residents for rejecting Sifuna during the 2017 elections when he vied for the Kanduyi parliamentary seat.
He mockingly reminded the locals that Sifuna received only 50 votes at the time, which he claimed was a reflection of their ability to judge his character early on.
“Kuna mwingine alikuja hapa 2017 mkampima mkampea kura 50, akakimbia kule Nairobi; sai anaongea maneno mingi. Unafikiri kuna kitu yoyote anajua? Kumbe nyinyi mlikuwa mmempima yeye, mkajua roho yake ni mbaya,” Aoron said.
Cheruiyot accused Sifuna of speaking recklessly and dismissing important development initiatives such as roads and hospitals. He said Sifuna’s remarks suggested that citizens do not want these projects, a position Cheruiyot strongly disagreed with.
He also mocked Sifuna’s attempts to challenge National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, saying he was not at the same level as the seasoned leader. Cheruiyot argued that Sifuna had no moral ground to lecture the government on development when he had previously been rejected by the people of Kanduyi.
The Kericho senator described Sifuna as a divisive leader and warned locals to remain alert to such leaders who, he claimed, could derail the country’s development agenda. He credited Kanduyi residents for identifying Sifuna’s character early enough and voting against him, which, according to Cheruiyot, spared them from future regret.
“Ati anatuambia wananchi hawataki barabara, ati hawataki hospitali. Kazi ni kutoa Ruto pekee yake, na nyinyi mlimuonea mbali sana. No wonder siku ile alisimama kura hapa Kanduyi, mlimpa kura 50 pekee yake. Si mnajua huyo mkora amekuja bunge juzi, ati anamkosoa speaker Wetangula, yeye anawezana na speaker Wetangula kweli?” he added.
Sifuna’s remarks
Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has consistently criticised the broad-based government formed through the March 7, 2025, MoU between President William Ruto and Raila Odinga.

On May 8, 2025, Sifuna declared that he does not recognise this “monster” government, asserting that it is merely Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration and not a true coalition. He argued that the MoU, which was intended to ensure stability following the 2024 Gen Z protests, is “dead” due to violations such as police brutality, including the death of Albert Ojwang.
Sifuna also declined to join an ODM review team, a move that attracted backlash from party members like Junet Mohamed and Gladys Wanga, who continue to defend the agreement.
