Cherargei: Why some politicians should be taken to Mathari Hospital
By Mark Mwithaga, April 28, 2026Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei suggested that some politicians should be admitted to the Mathari National Hospital.
Speaking the floor of the House on Tueday April 28, 2026,Cherargei cheekily remarked that some leaders should be clients of the mental health facility.
“….But I want to appreciate Mr Speaker. Some of the politicians in this country should be customers and clients of Mathari Mental Hospital because what they say over the weekend borders on mental disturbances by some of the politicians,” stated the senator.
He hilariously further called for the establishment of a VIP section to handle such cases.

“They need to visit Mathari hospital. I want to appeal that Mathari National Referral Hospital for treating mental diseases should be given the necessary support. “
I am proposing that we create a VIP section to accommodate some of these politicians who are inciting members of the public,” said Cherargei.
The vocal leader had earlier noted that he was left disappointed after hearing about the state of the health facility.
“I saw a statement from Senator Mwenda Gataya about Mathari hospital, where the services are poor. It is unfortunate that the hospital has those challenges,” noted the leader.
Mathari Hospital’s worrying condition
Tharaka Nithi Senator Mwenda Gataya had sought a statement during the Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Senate session on the conditions of the hospital.
“The hospital is in a state of deterioration characterised by dilapidated infrastructure, then shortage and overcrowding. The number of mental health professionals is also inadequate.”
“This affected the timely, dignified delivery of mental health services at the hospital,” the Mt Kenya politician stated.

He further called for various things to be looked into in order to change things at the facility.
“In the statement, the committee should address the following: the budget allocation for the hospital in the 2025/2026 financial year, broken down into funds allocated for infrastructure development, serving needs, medication and patient welfare,” proclaimed the leader.
Bed misery
In 2025, an audit brought into the limelight the alarming situation at the well-known hospital.

It was noted that the number of patients surpassed the number of documented beds at the hospital.
The dire situation had forced some patients to share beds while others slept on the floor, which raised the risk of cross-infection.
