Cherargei puts governor Sang on the spot over Nandi funds mismanagement

By , February 10, 2026

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has accused Governor Stephen Sang of failing to account for billions allocated to Nandi County, saying there is widespread mismanagement and stalled development projects. The senator said the situation violates the Constitution’s principles of leadership and integrity.

In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Senator Cherargei detailed his concerns about the county’s financial management and flagged multiple areas where public funds have either been misused or remain unaccounted for. He highlighted the payroll as a major concern, pointing out discrepancies in employee numbers and misuse of allocated funds.

“Governor Sang is leading the governors who have refused to be held accointable for the money allocated to Nandi County because he knows he has done nothing in terms of development in our county. This is a direct violation of article 96, 229 and chapter 6 on the leadership and integrity of our Constitution 2010,” Senator Cherargei said.

Cherargei also expressed concern over stalled health projects across the county, including key facilities that were meant to improve access to maternal and general healthcare.

“The questions involve; payroll scandal, favouritism, and nepotism that consume over 3.3 billion shillings, which is 44% of allocated money to Nandi County. Out of 4,884 employees it was reduced to 2,999 employees with unexplained 1,885 employees,” he said.

He further cited lack of progress in healthcare infrastructure and services, stressing that residents continue to suffer due to inaction.

“Stalled health projects such as Kapsengere, Chepterwai, Kapsabet Mother and Baby Unit, Kobujoi Sub-County Hospital, lack of drugs, and inadequate staffing in our hospital,” the senator noted.

Cherargei also called out misuse of county resources in roads, vehicle hire, and other public services, emphasizing that accountability must be upheld across all sectors.

“Poor state of roads in the county, yet Ksh 651,135,344 was allocated. Car hire services of Ksh42 million, yet the county has its own vehicles. Unaccounted boreholes drilling of 18,993,190 shillings. Unjustified hiring of lawyers of Ksh 41.9 million, even though the county has lawyers as per the County Attorney Act. Expenses of 114,554,330 shillings on fuels, oil and lubricants that cannot be accounted for,” he said.

He warned that the public will not allow mismanagement to continue and reiterated that accountability is a constitutional obligation for all governors.

“The Sang maladministration will not be allowed to run away from accountability while presiding over poor development, corruption and lethargy in our county. To all Governors, accountability is not a privilege or favour but a constitutional obligation that is in line with leadership and integrity principles. What’s hard to account for public money?” Cherargei added.
