Cherargei backs IG Kanja on arresting governors skipping House summons
By Kiprono Keileb, February 12, 2026Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has commended the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, for pledging full support to parliamentary committees in enforcing accountability.
The senator described the move as a strong step toward ensuring governors and other public officials respect summonses and answer for public funds.
Speaking after the police chief appeared before the Senate Public Accounts Committee (CPAC) on Thursday, February 12, 2026, Cherargei noted that the IG’s statement reinforces the principle that public resources must be managed transparently and responsibly.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday, February 12, 2026, Senator Cherargei said that officials who fail to appear before parliamentary committees would now face consequences, including arrest, to safeguard taxpayer money and uphold the law.
“Today in the morning, the Inspector General of police, Douglas Kanja, appeared before the Senate Public Accounts Committee (CPAC) at Parliament buildings, and CONFIRMED that the police will assist the committee to arrest any Governor or witnesses who decline or fail to appear before any parliamentary committee to provide accountability to money or resources allocated to them,” Senator Cherargei stated.
He added that public accountability is not negotiable, and the law must be enforced consistently across all levels of government.
“Accountability of public resources is not a favour nor privilege; it’s a constitutional obligation as per leadership and integrity principles,” the senator emphasised.

Cherargei also called on all governors and public officers to cooperate fully with parliamentary committees, warning that continued resistance would not be tolerated.
The senator observed that past delays and non-compliance by some officials have hindered proper scrutiny of public spending, and he welcomed the IG’s decisive stance as a measure to restore trust in public institutions.
He concluded by urging citizens to demand transparency and for the Senate to continue exercising its oversight role, stating that the collaboration between police and the Senate strengthens governance and safeguards public resources for the benefit of all Kenyans.
