Caleb Amisi puts Mt Kenya politics on the spot over Gachagua’s impeachment case
By Mustafa Juma, April 28, 2026Saboti Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi has sparked fresh political debate after raising a series of pointed questions on the implications of the impeachment saga involving former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, placing Mt Kenya politics and the 2027 succession matrix firmly under the spotlight.
Taking to his official X account on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Amisi questioned whether President William Ruto would ultimately “let Gachagua off the impeachment impediments” and allow him to mount a presidential bid in 2027, a scenario that could significantly reshape alliances ahead of the next general election.
“The big question this morning is will Ruto let Gachagua off the impeachment impediments and allow him to run for presidency?” Amisi posed.
He further asked whether, in the event Gachagua enters the race, the Mt Kenya region would rally behind him or shift support to another candidate outside the region, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the region’s political direction.

Amisi also raised constitutional and legal uncertainties around the impeachment process, questioning whether the courts could overturn it and what such a ruling would mean for the country’s leadership structure, including the possibility of Gachagua returning to government as a running mate.
“If he runs for top seat, will central region vote for Gachagua or another candidate outside central? Can the court overturn the impeachment? If it does, and Gachagua replaces Kindiki as running mate, will Central region continue singing #Wantam or #Tutam?” he added.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker who shifted his allegiance to the rebel Linda Mwananchi faction after the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga suggested that Kenya’s political landscape has become increasingly unpredictable, noting that recent national events have reshaped traditional political assumptions.
“Since Baba left us, nothing surprises me in Kenyan politics,” he said.

Gachagua’s impeachment case
Amisi’s remarks come amid an ongoing impeachment case in which Gachagua has now reiterated that he wants a full-term payment instead of reinstatement to the office.
Through his legal team led by Senior Counsel Paul Muite, on Monday, April 27, 2026, he told the court that even though they are still challenging the legality of his impeachment, he does not want to be reinstated.
Appearing before presiding Judge Eric Ogola, Lady Justice Fred Mugambi, and Antony Mrima, the former DP informed the bench that he had amended his petition to seek payment instead of reinstatement.
“My lords and lady, on May 29, 2025, I informed this court that the first petitioner, Rigathi Gachagua, was abandoning his reinstatement case,” SC Muite submitted.

Public participation
Gachagua also told the three-judge bench that the public participation done by the National Assembly at the Bomas of Kenya was led by the ODM party.
He noted that the said exercise, conducted on October 4 and 5, 2026, was not enough.
The bench heard that the exercise conducted at the Bomas by the August House in the impeachment proceedings was not adequate and meaningful, noting a clear violation of the Constitution.
