Caleb Amisi outlines election math plan to deny Ruto 50%+1 win

Saboti Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi has proposed a detailed opposition election strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an interview with a local podcast that aired on the night of Friday, May 15, 2026, Amisi argued that coordinated competition and post-election alliances could prevent President William Ruto from securing the constitutional 50%+1 threshold required to win the presidency in the first round.

He urged opposition formations to rethink their approach to the presidential race, suggesting that fragmentation at the ballot could ultimately work against the ruling coalition.

Run, then unite later

Amisi argued that opposition candidates should be allowed to contest freely in the first round before consolidating support in a potential runoff scenario.

He also said that the Linda Mwananchi movement should be allowed to field a presidential candidate to avoid voter apathy.

According to him, some of the movement’s followers don’t want to be associated with any of the opposition figures, and if leaders join forces with the opposition, they will be left with no other choice.

“Let these people run. There are people who just want Linda Mwananchi; they don’t want you to be with someone else. Because Linda Mwananchi is talking to those particular people on the streets, the hustlers. Why are you taking those people to go and dump them on the streets and join another opposition figure? Those people were not following those opposition figures before, and they have been there. They didn’t care about them; they have now seen the light in you. Why are you leaving them and joining the group that they have never followed? Those are the people we are talking about. If you don’t have a candidate for them, there will be voter apathy,” Amisi said.

“If we let them run freely, Ruto cannot get the 50%+1 required to win a presidential election. Atatoa wapi?”

He suggested that a divided opposition could still be strategically advantageous if followed by post-election consolidation based on demonstrated electoral strength.

Push for a runoff strategy

Amisi said the opposition should avoid early forced mergers and instead allow voters to determine each candidate’s real strength at the ballot.

“The best way to remove William Ruto is to get a runoff and then join together, knowing ‘mimi nimekuja na kura ngapi’,” he stated.

He argued that such a strategy would help opposition leaders understand their actual support base before forming alliances.

Questions over opposition strength

The legislator also questioned the electoral strength of several opposition figures, challenging how their popularity could be measured against the incumbent president.

“You want to join now on what basis? What is the strength of Kalonzo Musyoka? How can we measure his strength to beat William Ruto? How do we measure the strength of Sifuna? How do we measure the strength of Gachagua?” he posed.

Amisi suggested that only after the first round of voting would it be possible to accurately assess each candidate’s political weight.

He further speculated that a combination of opposition figures could potentially force a second round, naming possible alignments that could reshape the race.

“I would have wished that our Linda Mwananchi had a presidential candidate, and you know that one can actually lead. Then we have a coalition of the opposition, and let’s assume Kalonzo and Matiang’i run; don’t you think they can be number 2? Then let’s give Gachagua a chance. What do you think Ruto will be left with?” he said.

Amisi’s remarks come as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election, with leaders across the political divide increasingly outlining potential alliances and strategies, with Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang’i hinting at a political alliance with Linda Mwananchi’s Edwin Sifuna ahead of 2027.
