Saboti constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi has called on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to exit the broad-based government arrangement with President William Ruto with immediate effect.

Taking to his official X account on Sunday, May 4, 2025, Amisi argued that the assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were should not be in vain.

The ODM lawmaker further accused Ruto of killing the Raila Odinga-led Orange party from within, as he grows the influence of his United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Amisi on supporting Ruto

Amisi went ahead to urge the lawmakers allied to ODM to stop what he terms as celebrating and supporting regimes that kill and abduct young people.

“My colleagues in parliament must come to the realisation that even their political masters they worship daily against the pain, frustrations and suffering of Kenyans will disappear into thin air when they come for them. Parliament must press the independent button as a matter of urgency to save Kenyan democracy. Hon. Were’s death should not be in vain,” Amisi stated.

“Please stop celebrating and supporting regimes that kill and abduct young people. @TheODMparty must and should stop this broad-based nonsense with immediate effect. Coalitions of unlike minds have never solved issues in any democratic outfit before. Ruto is not foolish. He is slowly finishing ODM from within, and you will have no one to cry to. This is for your own good. Kenya needs a renaissance!” he wrote on X.

Governor Wanga’s concerns

Amisi’s remarks come hours after a section of ODM party leaders led by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who serves as the party’s national chairperson, vowed not to allow the ruling UDA to destabilise ODM strongholds by making strides into the Nyanza region.

Speaking on Saturday, May 3, 2025, Wanga said while the ODM party agreed to work with President Ruto’s government, it never agreed to the targeted assassination of its members.

“Who killed Kasipul MP Charles Were and why? That we want to know, and not in the far future; in the near future. We have said we are working together, but we did not sign up for the assassination of our members,” she said.

Wanga further expressed anger over the rising political tensions in Nyanza, describing them as attempts to destabilise ODM strongholds.

She warned against political incitement in the region and reaffirmed her commitment to defend the party’s presence in Nyanza.

“As the national chairman of the ODM party, I also want to make it very clear that Homa Bay County and the entire Nyanza region is an ODM zone. The next time I see people in this region shouting ‘UDA’, we will not agree; we will not accept. It will not happen under my watch as the national chairman of the ODM party,” Wanga affirmed.
