Bonnie Mwangi announces bid for Kiambu governor seat
Economist and governance advocate Bonnie Mwangi has declared his candidature for the Kiambu County gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election. He will contest on the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) ticket.
Mwangi, who holds advanced qualifications including an MBA from Cornell University and CPA credentials, announced his entry into the race through a statement posted on X on Monday, April 27, 2026. He said he is positioning himself on a platform of competence, fiscal prudence, and accountability.
He also expressed appreciation to PLP leader Martha Karua for admitting him into the party, which he described as focused on a progressive agenda for all Kenyans.
“Today, I am announcing my candidacy for Governor of Kiambu County. I am humbled to do so as a member of the People’s Liberation Party, PLP, the Party of Competence, Prudence, and a Progressive Agenda for all Kenyans – not just some of us,” read the X post in part.
Criticism of county financial management
Mwangi criticised the current county administration, stating it has operated like “a criminal enterprise” characterised by what he termed bloated wage bills, wasteful expenditure, and misplaced priorities.

He cited Controller of Budget and Auditor-General reports, stating that the county spent over Ksh 5.2 billion on salaries beyond the legal 35% cap between FY2022-2024. He further stated that salaries consumed up to 65% of revenue in one of the financial years, while development expenditure dropped to between 11% and 18% against a required minimum of 30%.
Mwangi also raised concerns over foreign travel expenditure, including trips to Dubai by county assembly officials, while noting that bursary allocations remained limited. He further referenced ongoing Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) investigations into transactions worth Ksh 1.5 billion and matters involving the Tatu City project.
He stated that if elected, he would cap salaries and wages at 25% of county revenue, projecting savings of Ksh 33 billion over five years. He said the funds would be redirected to infrastructure, bursaries, healthcare, and road development. He further proposed increasing bursary allocations to Ksh 1.5 billion annually.
Emerging Kiambu gubernatorial contest
The entry of Mwangi adds to a growing list of contenders for the Kiambu governorship. The seat is currently held by Governor Kimani Wamatangi of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), who is expected to seek re-election.
Other individuals linked to the race are Nyoro, Kiambu senator Kimani Wamatangi, Thika Town MP Patrick Wainaina, University lecturer Juliet Kimemia, and Kiambu County Assembly Speaker Stephen Ndichu, among others.
Political observers note that the contest is shaping into a competitive race ahead of the 2027 elections, with fiscal management, service delivery, and governance issues expected to dominate campaigns. Party nominations and coalition alignments are anticipated to further shape the final list of contenders.
