Babu Owino speaks on his exit from Parliamentary role
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has addressed reports that he was kicked out as the secretary general of the Kenya Young Parliamentarian Association (KYPA).
In a statement on Monday, September 4, 2023, Babu accused a section of the media of misrepresenting facts on matters KYPA.
The MP says he resigned from his position to focus on other matters and also give room to new members to serve.
“Some media houses should not misrepresent facts on matters KYPA. I resigned as the Secretary-General to give room for other new Members of Parliament to serve so as to focus on other matters,” he stated.
The MP says he voluntarily decided to step down from the position after a meeting involving 15 members of the KYPA allied to Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party.
Babu also revealed that Embakasi West Member of Parliament Mark Mwenje resigned from his position as the Deputy Secretary-General after being nominated by Azimio as the National Assembly Deputy Minority Whip.
Babu also revealed that nominated Senator Hezena Lemaletian stepped down from her position as the Treasurer to allow a new member to take the position.
“I served as the Secretary-General in the last Parliament in KYPA for five years. We did this for the best interest of all of us for rotational leadership. KYPA must stick to its principles. It must never be overtaken by the government. This is the caucus that should protect the interests of the youth in this nation,” he added.
“There was nothing like Babu being kicked out. Do I look like a person who can be kicked out of KYPA? It is KYPA that needs Babu Owino. Babu Owino does not need KYPA. But for the collective interest of all members and the respect we have for KYPA that is what makes us be part of it.”
The changes were made on Saturday night in Karen, at the residence of Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, when nominated MP Irene Mayaka was appointed to replace Babu Owino and Kitui women rep Irene Kasalu as treasurer.
