Azimio to resume countrywide anti-government protests on Wednesday
By Francis Muli, July 7, 2023Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party has announced that it will hold further anti-government protests on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.
Speaking after countrywide protests on Friday, Azimio leader Raila Odinga said that the Saba Saba demonstrations marked the “beginning” of countrywide protests which would see President William Ruto dethroned.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank Kenyans, throughout the country who heeded our call and turned up in large numbers. We want them to say tuned because this is just part of the beginning,” Raila said.
“The people of Kenya have a right to picket, demonstrate, and petition. We will collect signatures from Kenyans, form an electoral commission, and carry out a referendum to delegitimize this regime.”
“The people of Kenya have a right to picket, demonstrate and petition. Article 1 of the Constitution says that the sovereignty in Kenya is vested in the people of Kenya and the people can either exercise it directly or through their elected representatives,” he added.
National Assembly Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi said that the opposition will not cease the protests until they are heard.
“We have simply notified you (police)that come next Wednesday the whole country will come to a standstill as Kenyans of all walks of life participate in massive demonstrations in every width and breadth of the country,” Wandayi said.
“On Wednesday the whole country will come to a standstill as Kenyans of all walks of life participate in massive demonstrations in every width and breadth of the country. It is going to continue until the end.”
Protests in Nairobi will be preceded by a rally at Kamukunji grounds in Nairobi.
