Kibra MP defends Azimio’s snub of National Prayer Breakfast

Kibra Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Orero has defended Azimio la Umoja leaders who gave the National Prayer Breakfast a wide berth on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Speaking during a K24 TV interview on Friday, May 31, 2024, the Kibra legislator made it clear that Azimio leaders were not under any obligation to attend the prayer breakfast held at Safari Park Hotel.

Additionally, Peter Orero asserted that the Freedom of Worship is deeply enshrined in the constitution informing the opposition’s decision to snub the National Prayer Breakfast meeting.

“First we have freedom of worship and we have freedom of speech. That means that you must not pray where the President is to say it is a national prayer day.

“It should not be an issue that we don’t attend the National Prayer Day. We can pray where we are,” Orero insisted.

The National Prayer Breakfast was attended by top leaders led by President William Ruto, his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua, Cabinet Secretaries, Speakers of both houses, MPs and Senators.

Orero demands accountability

Orero who vowed not to attend the National Prayer Breakfast meetings, called for the organisers of the event to give a full account on the money used to bankroll it.

“When we talk about austerity measures, we would wish to know as a country, how much did we save and how much did we spend,” Orero remarked.

Instead of hosting the National Prayer Breakfast at luxurious hotels, Orero challenged leaders to advocate hosting the event at their churches which he argued was more economical.

“We should not be tied that everybody must attend the National Prayer Day. I have never attended any National Prayer Day and I don’t think I will ever attend,” Orero retorted.

Where Azimio leaders convened

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Thursday, May 30, 2024, convened a special National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting. Several Azimio leaders attended the meeting where they called out President William Ruto’s administration over a number of issues.

Kalonzo condemned what they termed punitive tax measures in the Finance Bill 2024, arguing that the poor and middle class will be hit hard, exacerbating the country’s economic hardships.

“In regards to the Finance Bill 2024, it looks like this government is determined to kill the middle class,” Kalonzo stated.

“We must pray to this government to hear the cries of Kenyans who have been overburdened,” DAP-K Party leader Eugene Wamalwa who attended the meeting added.
