Aladwa: ODM move to work with UDA is not sign of surrender
By Kiprono Keileb, July 31, 2025Makadara MP George Aladwa has defended ODM’s decision to engage in a structured working relationship with the Kenya Kwanza administration, dismissing suggestions that the move signals political surrender.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, July 31, 2025, Aladwa emphasised that the cooperation agreement is anchored in the national interest to promote unity, dialogue, and democratic stability.
“The decision to enter into a structured working relationship with the Kenya Kwanza administration is not a sign of surrender or compromise,” he said.
“It is an act of national duty. It affirms our long-standing commitment to peaceful dialogue, national cohesion, and safeguarding of Kenya’s democratic foundations.” Aladwa added
Aladwa said ODM has long warned against the dangers of unchecked political hostility, rising tension, and continued political oppression, especially during a period when the country desperately needs healing, reform, and renewal.
“We have warned against the dangers of continued political oppression and rising anarchism, especially at a time when the country needs healing, reforms, and renewal. Tuesday’s resolution confirms that ODM is united in purpose and ready to be part of solutions,” he stated.

He also addressed concerns within the party regarding divisions around the decision to cooperate with the ruling coalition.
“The party has also acknowledged and addressed the internal divisions that had emerged around the subject,” he said. “Concerns have been raised, particularly about our Secretary General, but I want to affirm that Hon. Edwin Sifuna is fully aligned with the leadership decision.”
Aladwa noted that unity within ODM ranks is vital to ensuring the party remains a credible voice in shaping Kenya’s political direction.
“This clarity is essential not only for party members but also the public who look up to ODM for political leadership,” he said. “Unity within our ranks is critical if we are to play a meaningful role in shaping the future of this country.”
The Makadara MP also threw his weight behind the proposal to establish a joint technical committee composed of members from both ODM and UDA, describing it as a crucial mechanism to oversee the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
“This board is instrumental in identifying and resolving emerging issues, ensuring that the MoU is implemented in a transparent, inclusive, and consultative manner,” he said.
He added that ODM leaders in Nairobi County were fully behind the party’s new direction and would play an active role in supporting the joint initiative.
“We must now move forward with one voice, one agenda, and one commitment to serve the people of Kenya,” Aladwa declared.
The statement comes in the wake of increased political dialogue between the opposition and the ruling coalition, raising both optimism and scrutiny over the future of bipartisan cooperation.
