Aaron Cheruiyot: I will be disappointed if Ruto scores less than 60% in 2027 elections

By , May 8, 2026

Kericho County Senator Aaron Cheruiyot has openly set a high-performance benchmark for President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying he would be disappointed if the head of state fails to secure at least 60 per cent of the vote.

Speaking in an interview on an online podcast on Thursday, May 7, 2026, Cheruiyot argued that the president’s popularity should translate into a decisive first-round win, likening the electoral process to a predictable competition where outcomes should reflect a clear advantage.

“To be honest, I would be very disappointed by President William Ruto if he scores less than 60 per cent in the next presidential elections, and many of us have said this to him in public and in private because it’s like sitting for an exam that has been set and is leaked.

“It’s like running in a race; you are an athlete, and you are competing against somebody who doesn’t even train, and you lose the race,” Cheruiyot said.

Cheruiyot further dismissed the likelihood of a presidential runoff, insisting that the political momentum around the current administration makes it highly improbable for any challenger to force a second round under the constitutional 50+1 threshold.

Ruto’s target

Previously, President Ruto also declared that he is targeting a landslide victory in the 2027 General Election, saying he wants to win by a margin of between two and three million votes.

Speaking at State House during the UDA National Governing Council (NGC) meeting on Monday, January 26, 2026, Ruto said lessons from past political turbulence had informed the formation of the current broad-based government, which he described as a success.

Ruto expressed confidence that he was going to win the upcoming 2027 presidential race with a margin of between 2,000,000 and 3,000,000 votes.

“We have agreed with the leadership of ODM to explore options and opportunities for having a coalition going into the next election. Hii election inakuja, we want to win by a margin of between two and three million. The last election we won by a margin of 200,000 votes, but this coming election, we must win by a margin of 2 to 3 million ndo tuunganishe Kenya na tutembee pamoja,” Ruto said.
