Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has disclosed that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has clarified the status of any cases against Wycliffe Oparanya, the former Governor of Kakamega County.

Oparanya, nominated for the position of Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, faced integrity questions amid reports of multiple allegations.

Wetang’ula addressed these concerns, revealing that the vetting committee had sought clarification from the DPP.

According to Wetang’ula, the DPP confirmed that no cases or investigations were ongoing against Oparanya, contrary to media reports.

“We hope you may find favor and if you do, do things differently. I want to confirm to the public that this committee instructed the clerk to write to the DPP and confirm whether there were criminal proceedings as publicized against you,” Wetang’ula stated.

“The DPP responded, confirming there are no investigations or proceedings of any nature against you,” he added.

During the vetting process, Oparanya defended himself against allegations of graft and his recent conflicts with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments on Sunday, August 4, 2024, Oparanya stated that he had never been approached by the commission to record a statement.

The former Governor criticized what he described as public and media prosecution, noting that his side of the story had not been heard.

He informed Members of Parliament that he first received a call in August 2023 from individuals claiming to be EACC officials.

These officials reportedly raided his house, confiscating items including his children’s phones.
