Chiefs have been tasked to mobilise their respective communities to plant at least 250 trees every month in an effort to meet the national goal of 15 billion trees by 2032.
The administrators will rally communities to plant trees every first Friday of the month, an exercise aimed at combating deforestation and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.
This follows yesterday’s launch of the Chiefs Climate Action Day initiative by Internal Security and National Administration PS Raymond Omollo.
During the launch at Ondiri wetlands in Kikuyu constituency, the PS said chiefs will lead Kenya’s path to a greener future. “Chiefs will lead monthly tree-planting events across the country, supporting President William Ruto’s directive for the nation to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.”
He said the community-based initiative will help enhance biodiversity, restore degraded landscapes, reduce greenhouse emissions and achieve long-term environmental sustainability.
Trees serve as natural windbreakers, protecting farmland and reducing soil erosion, essential for agriculture and food stability. “Kenya’s goal to restore 1.5 million hectares begins with Chiefs Climate Action Day,” he said.
Kinoo chief Susan Njeri Karanja said the initiative aims at empower local leaders particularly chiefs to take a front line role in climate action within the community.
