Two Kenya Certificate of Secondary School Examination (KCSE) candidates from Nyamira County yesterday sat their first papers in hospital.

Nyamira County Commissioner Erastus Mbui who is coordinating the exercise in the county could not immediately confirm but The People Daily independently established that two girls from two different schools within Nyamira South Sub-county sat their examinations at the County Referral Hospital in Nyamira Town.

One young mother had delivered on Sunday while the other one from a boarding school within the same area also was still admitted at the same facility after experiencing labour pains.

When asked to verify, Mbui said the Ministry of Education has not yet briefed him if there were such cases and insisted that it had to be formally reported.

“For such reports, they have to be reported officially to be declared. For now, we are yet to get briefs but I believe as from today, we shall have a comprehensive report,” Mbui said.

The candidates are part of the 19,088 from across the country who will be seating for the KCSE examination. County Education Director Joshau Kaga said there were 9,800 boys while girls were 9200.

Enhanced delivery

Kaga assured centre managers and candidates that the government was keen on enhancing delivery of the tests in time and that security was enhanced well to meet the requirements. The national examination commenced on October 22, but candidates began sitting for the main papers on November 4.

A total of 965,501 candidates across 10,754 centres are sitting for the national test this year.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba warned against examination malpractice, affirming that action would be taken against any perpetrators.

“This year the rules are very strict. The examination papers have security features and we are ensuring that there are no mobile phones in any examination centre. And if you find somebody is insisting that they want to be there with the phone, it is an offence and we can take disciplinary action against them,” Ogamba remarked.
