US Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, has commended Kenya’s progress in decarbonising its transport sector through e-mobility initiatives. During a visit to asset financier Mogo’s electric vehicle (EV) showroom in Nairobi yesterday, Whitman emphasised the US’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s transition to e-mobility as a shared priority.

The US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) has provided $30 million (Sh3.9 billion) in financing to three e-mobility companies in Kenya, including Mogo.

Green mobility efforts

Mogo has invested Sh1.3 billion of this funding into expanding its EV financing portfolio, thereby advancing Kenya’s green mobility efforts by offering essential zero-emission vehicle financing to individuals and businesses in the transportation sector. The company is focusing on financing e-bikes and three-wheelers, making various EV brands accessible to Kenyans nationwide.

“Investing in electric vehicles and motorcycles benefits Kenya in multiple ways. These investments create high-quality jobs for Kenyans in a growing industry,” said Whitman.

She added that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, modernize the country’s extensive transport system—especially in urban areas—and address the escalating climate crisis.

Over the past five years, Mogo has lent Sh20 billion for boda boda and motor vehicle loans, providing affordable financial products to more than 120,000 Kenyans.
