President William Ruto has confirmed the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) has been extended for three more years, allowing Kenya to continue exporting goods duty-free to the United States.

Taking to his official X account on Thursday, January 29, 2026, Ruto confirmed the extension following a meeting with United States Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau at State House, Nairobi.

“Met United States Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who is on a two-day visit to Kenya, at State House Nairobi. We discussed various bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest,” Ruto said.

On his part, Ruto noted that the three-year extension will see Kenyan products enter the US market duty-free and quota-free, which has been significant in increasing trade from Kenya and other countries in Africa.

“The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), through which thousands of African goods and products enter the US market duty-free and quota-free, has been significant in increasing trade from Kenya and other countries from our continent,” Ruto added.

“Welcomed the US Government’s renewal of AGOA, which had expired in 2025, for another three years,” Ruto said.

According to Ruto, the team was able to discuss a comprehensive trade agreement, including the issues under the elimination or reduction of tariffs in various goods and products, digital trade, and investment, among others.

“Further, we appreciated Kenya-US cooperation in regional and global peace and security issues. Thanked the US for support in the transition of the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support mission in Haiti into a more robust Gang Suppression Force, including the provision of the necessary equipment and vehicles,” he noted.

President Ruto further explained that the duo held a discussion on Kenya’s efforts to combat the threats of terrorism and violent extremism in Somalia.

“Mr Landau underscored the need to reassess strategies employed in Somalia after more than 20 years of these challenges, and how best to support Somalia,” he added.

He went on to affirm a deliberation on the Sudan civil war, which has been marked by loss of life, destruction of national infrastructure and a humanitarian catastrophe in which seven million people require food, water and medicines.

According to Ruto, Kenya is ready to offer logistical support to facilitate humanitarian efforts to deliver food, medical supplies and other essential items.
