KRA introduces automated payment plan to ease tax settlements for struggling taxpayers

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has rolled out a new Automated Payment Plan (APP) to help taxpayers manage outstanding tax liabilities in structured instalments.

The initiative aims to make compliance easier for Kenyans who may struggle to settle their taxes in one payment.

In a public notice issued through MyGov weekly newspaper on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, KRA outlined that the system-driven solution will allow eligible taxpayers to pay not only principal tax but also penalties and interest over time.

The authority stressed that the plan is designed to enhance convenience and promote tax compliance across the country.

To qualify for the APP, taxpayers must meet a set of conditions. KRA stated that applicants must possess a valid KRA PIN and be fully compliant with iTax registration and profile updates, must have confirmed tax liability in the KRA system that is not subject to active litigation or appeal, and demonstrate genuine inability or impracticality to settle the full liability in a single payment, submit a proposed instalment schedule via iTax or other means. “To qualify for the APP, taxpayers must meet the following conditions:

  1. Ensure the instalment period does not exceed six months.

2. Possess a valid KRA PIN and be fully compliant with iTax registration and profile updates.

3. Have a confirmed tax liability in the KRA system that is not subject to active litigation or appeal.

4. Demonstrate genuine inability or impracticality to settle the full liability in a single payment.

5. Submit a proposed instalment schedule via iTax or other designated KRA portals, subject to system
validation.

Termination of the plan, enforcement actions

The Authority cautioned that failure to adhere to the agreed payment schedule could lead to the termination of the plan. KRA warned that non-compliance may trigger enforcement actions.

“Failure to adhere to the agreed payment schedule may lead to termination of the plan and trigger enforcement actions. These may include revocation of the Tax Compliance Certificate and other legal recovery measures,” the notice reads

The authority encouraged taxpayers to report corruption through their contacts and mail addresses. The new APP is expected to provide relief to many Kenyans who have struggled to meet tax obligations while ensuring the Authority continues to maintain transparency and accountability in tax collection.
