Kenya bids to host World Geothermal Congress’ 29
Kenya has announced its bid to host the World Geothermal Congress in 2029, a prestigious global geothermal forum that seeks to scale up global deployment of geothermal energy.
Principal Secretary, State Department for Energy, Alex Wachira confirmed the government’s intention during the ongoing 2024 Kenya Geothermal Congress being held in Nairobi.
“Hosting the WGC 2029 will bolster Kenya’s position as a global leader in deployment of renewable energy and give us a competitive edge not just in Africa but in the global energy market,” he said.
The World Geothermal Congress is held every three years bringing together industry leaders, academia, finance sector, governments, NGO’s and communities to collaborate and provide thoughtful solutions for a sustainable society.
“I wish to confirm that the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum fully supports this bid, so that through hosting the World Geothermal Congress, Kenya and Africa will be able to attract enhanced Foreign Direct Investments in Geothermal development to spur industrialisation,” added Wachira.
The PS underscored the role of geothermal in Kenya’s long-term development blueprint towards 100per cent transition to renewable energy by 2030. “Kenya’s journey towards advancing its leadership position in development of renewable energy is on course, ” he added.
